مجمع اعتباری مهندسی و تکنولوژی(the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology) که يکی از وظايف آن تعريف و يکسانسازی واژههای مهندسيست ، مهندسی را به صورت زير تعريف میکند :
مهندسی ، مجموعه مهارتهايی است که با استفاده از معلومات رياضی و علوم طبيعی و در اثر مطالعه ، تمرين و تکرار حاصل شدهاند و ما را به راههای بهرهگيری اقتصادیتر از مواد اوليه و منابع طبيعی در جهت منافع انسانيمان رهنمون میکنند .

American Engineers' Council for Professional Development (ECPD, the predecessor of ABET) has defined engineering as follows:
“[T]he creative application of scientific principles to design or develop structures, machines, apparatus, or manufacturing processes, or works utilizing them singly or in combination; or to construct or operate the same with full cognizance of their design; or to forecast their behavior under specific operating conditions; all as respects an intended function, economics of operation and safety to life and property.”

انجمن مهندسین آمریکا برای توسعه حرفه ای ECPD مهندسی را اینگونه تعریف کرده است:
کاربرد خلاق اصول علمی برای طراحی، توسعه و به کارگیری ساختارها، ماشین ها، دستگاه ها یا فرایندهای تولید و همچنین ساخت، راه اندازی، پیشبینی رفتار در شرایط مشخص، نحوه عملکرد، مسایل اقتصادی و ایمنی را مهندسی می نامیم.
